Uzbek Atlas Silk: Ikat Dyeing Traditions
Priya Sutaria·Published

The Art of Abr Bandi
Atlas silk is Central Asia's most distinctive textile, known for its bold geometric patterns created through the abr bandi resist-dyeing technique.
Production Process
Creating Atlas silk requires extraordinary precision. Warp threads are bound with waxed cotton thread, then immersed in natural dye baths.
Color Symbolism
Red and black combinations were worn by married women, yellow and green by unmarried women. Five-color Atlas was reserved for nobility.
Fergana Valley Workshops
The Fergana Valley remains the heartland of Atlas production. Margilan and Andijan have maintained continuous ikat weaving traditions for over 500 years.
Contemporary Revival
Since Uzbekistan's independence in 1991, Atlas silk has experienced a cultural renaissance, with designers bringing patterns to international runways.
