Ethnic Fabric Care: Washing Guide for Global Textiles

Aaron Whyte·Published

Global Textiles Need Special Care

Traditional fabrics from around the world often use natural dyes, hand-weaving techniques, and delicate fibers that require specific care methods. Improper washing can cause colors to bleed, fibers to shrink, or hand-applied decorations to detach.

Silk and Silk Blends

Hand wash in cool water with silk-specific detergent. Never soak for more than 5 minutes. Roll in a towel to remove excess water and lay flat to dry. Iron on low heat while slightly damp. Store on padded hangers in breathable garment bags.

Batik and Resist-Dyed Fabrics

Wash batik separately for the first few washes as excess dye may bleed. Use cool water and mild detergent. Avoid bleach, which damages both the fabric and the wax-resist patterns. Line dry in shade — direct sunlight fades natural dyes quickly.

Embroidered and Beaded Textiles

Turn embroidered items inside out before washing to protect the stitch work. Use a mesh laundry bag for machine washing on gentle cycle. Never wring or twist — the stress can break embroidery threads and detach beads. Lay flat to dry and press from the back side.
