Preserving Handwoven Treasures

Handwoven textiles require thoughtful care to maintain their beauty and structural integrity. Unlike mass-produced fabrics, each piece carries the artisan's labor and cultural heritage.

Washing Guidelines

Most handwoven textiles benefit from gentle hand washing in cool water with mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid harsh agitation. For silk and delicate wools, use specialized cleaners. Always test a small hidden area first for colorfastness.

Drying Methods

Never wring handwoven textiles — this distorts the weave. Instead, gently press water out between towels, then lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight. Hanging wet textiles can stretch fibers and distort patterns.

Storage Best Practices

Store folded textiles in acid-free tissue paper, away from direct light. For wool pieces, add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths. Never store in plastic bags — textiles need to breathe. Refold periodically to prevent permanent crease lines.

Repair and Maintenance

Address small issues immediately — a loose thread, minor tear, or weakened seam. Learn basic darning or find a skilled textile conservator for valuable pieces. Regular care prevents small problems from becoming irreversible damage.
