Torres Strait Islander Ceremonial Dress
Hannah Wickes·Published

Torres Strait Culture
The Torres Strait Islands, between Australia and Papua New Guinea, blend Aboriginal, Melanesian, and maritime influences in their unique culture.
The Dhari Headdress
The dhari is the most iconic element, made from cassowary or frigate bird feathers. It is the central symbol of Torres Strait Islander identity, appearing on the flag.
Construction
Traditional dhari use woven vine or bark bases, with feathers attached by fiber cordage and beeswax. White cockatoo feathers represent purity, red feathers signify warrior status.
Body Adornment
Ceremonial dress includes pandanus fiber armbands, shell-decorated leg bands, and pearl shell chest pendants.
Dance and Performance
Dress is designed for movement. During dances, feathers sway, armbands flash, and leg bands provide percussive accompaniment.
