Oyalı: Turkey's Needlelace Art

Oyalı (pronounced oyah-luh) is Turkish needle lace, created with a single needle and thread using a knotted loop technique. It decorates headscarves, collars, and household textiles throughout Anatolia.

Technique

Unlike European bobbin lace, oyalı is made with a single needle. The lacemaker creates a foundation chain, then builds up rows of tiny knots and loops to form floral, geometric, or figurative patterns.

Regional Styles

  • Aegean oyalı — bold flowers and fruits in bright colors
  • Central Anatolian — fine geometric patterns in white
  • Black Sea — dense foliage motifs with metallic thread

Cultural Role

Young women traditionally learn oyalı from their mothers and grandmothers. A bride's trousseau includes dozens of oyalı-decorated scarves, each pattern carrying symbolic meaning about fertility, protection, or love.

Preservation

Turkish cultural foundations run oyalı workshops in cities like Konya and Ankara. The craft has gained international attention through social media, with younger women rediscovering the technique.
