Kurdish Textile: Kilim Weaving Art
Amara Diallo·Published

Woven Stories of the Mountains
Kurdish kilims are flat-woven textiles that serve as both functional household items and artistic expressions. Each piece encodes the weaver's personal story, tribal identity, and aspirations.
Techniques
Kilim weaving uses a slit-weave technique that creates distinctive gaps between color areas. This produces crisp geometric patterns characteristic of Kurdish designs.
Natural Dyes
Traditional Kurdish weavers use dyes from madder root (red), walnut husks (brown), pomegranate rind (yellow), and indigo (blue). These natural dyes age beautifully over decades.
Social Function
Kilims served as floor coverings, room dividers, storage bags, and dowry items. A young woman's weaving skill was an important factor in marriage negotiations.
