Kurdish Dress: Beaded Regional Variety

A People Without Borders, A Dress With Many Faces

Kurdish traditional dress is as diverse as the Kurdish homeland itself — spanning parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Without a unified nation-state to standardize dress, Kurdish clothing evolved independently in each region, creating a stunning variety of styles that share common threads of color, layering, and craftsmanship.

Regional Styles

In Iraqi Kurdistan (Sorani region), women wear flowing gowns of sheer fabric over colorful underdresses, adorned with sequins, beads, and gold jewelry. The headpiece often features a tall, conical shape draped with scarves and gold coins. Turkish Kurdish dress (Kurmanji region) favors heavier fabrics with bold embroidery — dark velvet vests over bright silk shirts. Iranian Kurdish styles incorporate the distinctive klawsh (soft leather shoes) and wide cummerbund sashes.

Men's Traditional Wear

Kurdish men's dress is more uniform across regions: baggy trousers (shalwar) gathered at the waist, a collarless shirt, and a wide sash (pistên) wrapped multiple times around the waist. The head covering — a turban-style wrap called cemedanî or jamadani — varies in wrapping style by region and tribal affiliation.
