Hannah Wickes·Published

Footwear of the Mountains

Giveh are traditional Iranian shoes handmade in the Zagros mountain region and other parts of western Iran. Characterized by their woven cotton or silk uppers and soles made from compressed cloth layers, giveh have been worn by Iranian people for centuries.

Construction Technique

The sole (zireh) is made by compressing multiple layers of cotton cloth with a needle and strong thread until it forms a firm, durable base. The upper (rooyeh) is woven on a small loom or knitted by hand in geometric patterns using cotton, silk, or wool thread.

Regional Styles

Kermanshah giveh are known for fine silk uppers with intricate patterns. Sanandaj (Kurdish) giveh feature bold geometric designs. Hawrami giveh from the Kurdistan region use distinctive color combinations. Each region has its own characteristic patterns and construction methods.

Modern Appeal

Giveh are experiencing renewed popularity as comfortable, breathable, and culturally meaningful footwear. Iranian designers are creating modern giveh with contemporary color palettes while maintaining traditional construction methods.
