The Chokha Defined
The chokha is a long, fitted coat with high collar, wide skirt, and ornamental cartridge holders (gaziri) across the chest.
Construction
Traditional chokha are made from handwoven wool in dark colors: black, navy, burgundy, or dark green.
Regional Variations
The Kartli-Kakhetian style is the most formal. The Adjarian style is shorter and may be white for summer wear.
Modern Significance
After Georgia's 1991 independence, the chokha revived as a national identity symbol. It is worn at weddings, state ceremonies, and cultural festivals.
Contemporary Design
Modern designers have created shorter versions in lighter fabrics. Women's versions have been created for those wishing to express Georgian identity.
