Armenian Taraz: National Costume Heritage

Armenian taraz encompasses the diverse traditional costumes of the Armenian people, reflecting thousands of years of cultural continuity. Despite centuries of displacement, Armenians have maintained their distinctive textile traditions.
Historical Regions
Western Armenian taraz featured elaborate silver jewelry and richly embroidered velvets. Eastern Armenian taraz used simpler fabrics with distinctive apron designs and coin headdresses.
Women's Taraz
The traditional women's ensemble included a long dress (zgest), an ornate apron (gnjgots), a decorated belt, and an elaborate headdress. Silver coins, coral, and turquoise adorned the headdress.
Modern Revival
Armenian designers are incorporating taraz elements into contemporary fashion. Traditional embroidery motifs and color combinations appear in modern garments connecting diaspora Armenians to their heritage.
