Georgian Chokha: Caucasus Warrior Dress
Marcus Reid·Published

The Georgian chokha is one of the most visually striking garments in Caucasus dress traditions. This wool coat with its distinctive cartridge holders across the chest has become a powerful symbol of Georgian identity.
Construction
The chokha is a long, fitted coat reaching below the knee, typically made from handwoven wool in black, grey, or burgundy. The chest features two rows of decorative cartridge holders (gazyr).
Accessories
The chokha is worn with a leather belt bearing a silver dagger (khanjali), a wool cape (nabadi), and the distinctive papakha (fur hat).
Regional Variations
Kakhetian chokha is shorter and more practical. Khevsureti chokha features colorful embroidery and cross motifs. Adjarian versions use lighter fabrics suited to the Black Sea coast.
