Kurdish Dress: Regional Diversity in One Nation

A Tapestry of Regional Styles
Kurdish traditional dress varies dramatically across the four parts of Kurdistan (in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria), reflecting the diverse geography, climate, and cultural influences of each region. Despite this diversity, shared elements unite Kurdish identity.
Iraqi Kurdistan
The most internationally recognized Kurdish dress comes from Iraqi Kurdistan: voluminous trousers (shalwar), a fitted jacket over a sheer underdress, and an elaborate belt. Women wear sequined fabrics and coin jewelry for celebrations.
Regional Distinctions
- Turkish Kurdistan: darker colors, heavier fabrics, headscarves with coins
- Iranian Kurdistan: layered dresses with vests, silk sashes
- Syrian Kurdistan: lighter fabrics, simpler silhouettes
The Shal and Shapik
Men's traditional dress includes the shal (baggy trousers) and shapik (waistcoat). The turban style and sash wrapping method indicate tribal and regional identity. This ensemble remains common in rural areas and at cultural events.
