What Is Ikat?
Ikat is a resist-dye technique where threads are bound and dyed before weaving. Unlike batik, ikat creates patterns in the thread itself.
Three Types
- Warp ikat: only warp dyed. Central Asia, Indonesia.
- Weft ikat: only weft dyed. India, Japan.
- Double ikat: both dyed. Patan, Tenganan, Okinawa.
Regional
Sumba: figurative warp ikat. Kurume: cotton weft kasuri. Uzbek: Abr silk. Guatemala: Jaspe backstrap.
