How to Wear a Sari: Draping Styles Guide
Priya Nambiar·Published

Understanding the Sari
The sari is an unstitched garment of 5-9 meters of fabric, draped around the body. One of the oldest garment forms, dating to the Indus Valley Civilization.
Nivi Style
The most common style: tuck one end at the navel, wrap once. Create 5-7 pleats at center front. Drape the pallu over the left shoulder.
Key Tips
Use safety pins for pallu and pleats. Petticoat should fit snugly. Lower edge should graze the floor.
Bengali Style
No pleats: wrap twice, pallu over left shoulder and under right arm. Keys traditionally tied to pallu end to keep drape secure.
Gujarati Style
Pallu comes from back over right shoulder, spread across front, tucked at left hip. Displays the pallu pattern prominently.
