Caring for Hand-Embroidered Pieces

Preserving Handwork
Hand-embroidered textiles represent hundreds of hours of skilled labor and carry cultural significance. Unlike mass-produced garments, embroidered pieces cannot simply be replaced. Proper care extends their life for decades.
Cleaning Embroidered Textiles
Never machine-wash unless certain of colorfastness. Hand-wash in cool water with gentle pH-neutral detergent. Submerge gently, swish without agitating, soak 15-20 minutes. Rinse in cool water. Never wring: roll in a towel to absorb water, then dry flat away from sunlight.

Storage Best Practices
Store flat or rolled, never on hangers. Use acid-free tissue between folds. Store in cool, dry, dark environments. Cedar chests should be lined with tissue. Inspect stored pieces twice yearly for moth damage, mold, or discoloration.
Display and Rotation
Use UV-filtering glass for displayed pieces. Rotate every 6-12 months. For wearable pieces, rotate between multiple items rather than wearing one repeatedly. Address minor repairs immediately before they worsen, using thread matching the original.
