Polish Folk Costume Regional Styles

A Nation of Regional Dress

Poland has one of European richest folk costume traditions, with over 50 distinct regional styles. Each costume reflects local materials, historical influences, and community identity. While everyday wear of folk costume declined in the 20th century, they remain vibrant at festivals, weddings, and cultural celebrations.

Kraków (Krakowiak)

Perhaps Polish most recognized folk costume, the Kraków costume features:

  • Women: floral-embroidered white blouse, colorful floral skirt with apron, coral bead necklaces, flower wreath (for unmarried) or headscarf (for married)
  • Men: white embroidered shirt, dark vest with brass buttons, white trousers with red embroidery, distinctive rogatywka cap with peacock feather

Łowicz

The Łowicz costume is famous for its bold rainbow-colored stripes (pasiaki). Both mens and womens clothing features horizontal stripes in every color — a textile tradition dating to the 19th century when striped fabric was woven on local looms.

Kaszuby (Kashubia)

The Kashubian costume from northern Poland features distinctive embroidery in gold and silver thread on dark fabric — a style influenced by nearby Baltic trade routes and contact with Scandinavian cultures.

Podhale (Highlander)

The highland costume from the Tatra Mountains is one of the few still worn regularly:

  • Men: thick wool trousers with heart-shaped embroidery (sercowe), leather belts with brass studs, distinctive felt hats (kapeluś góralski) adorned with shells and feathers
  • Women: white embroidered blouses, floral skirts, red coral beads, and elaborate headpieces for special occasions

Preservation

Polish folk costumes are preserved through state-supported folk ensembles, museum collections, and regional festivals. The annual Festival of Mountain Folklore in Zakopane showcases highland traditions, while harvest festivals across Poland provide occasions for communities to wear their traditional dress.
