Kanjeevaram Silk Saree: Temple Town Weaving

India Most Prestigious Saree

The Kanjeevaram silk saree is considered the most prestigious handwoven saree in India, woven in the temple town of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.

The Korvai Technique

The body, border, and pallu are woven separately and interlocked. This creates a strong join — even if the saree tears, the border will not separate.

Design Elements

  • Temple borders: triangular gopuram motifs
  • Peacock (mayil): the most popular animal motif
  • Mango (manga): the paisley, symbolizing fertility

GI Protection

Kanjeevaram sarees received Geographical Indication status in 2005, protecting the name for sarees woven in the Kanchipuram region.
