Inuit Parka: Caribou Skin Cold Engineering
Tom Renshaw·Published

Survival Engineering
The Inuit parka represents thousands of years of cold-weather engineering. Made from caribou skin, these garments provide protection in temperatures reaching -50C and below.
Caribou Skin Properties
Each caribou hair is hollow, trapping air for insulation. The skin is lightweight yet incredibly warm — two layers provide sufficient protection for the harshest conditions.
Construction
- Inner layer: fur facing inward against the body
- Outer layer: fur facing outward, larger cut for air circulation
- Hood ruff: wolverine or wolf fur (ice does not adhere)
The Amauti
The amauti is a women parka with a built-in baby pouch. The child rides against the mother bare back for warmth while her hands remain free.
