Robin Maitland·Published

Beadwork as Communication
Zulu beadwork is one of Africa most sophisticated visual communication systems. Young women create beaded panels that convey messages of love, rejection, or encouragement.
Color Vocabulary
- White: purity, true love / nothing, emptiness
- Red: deep love, passion / anger, heartache
- Blue: faithfulness / hostility
Pattern Grammar
Triangle shapes indicate marital status: point down = unmarried woman, point up = married man. Color combinations create complex messages.
