Bogolan: Earth and Chemistry

Bogolan is a handmade cotton fabric from Mali, dyed using fermented mud and plant extracts. The technique relies on a chemical reaction between iron-rich mud and tannins.

Production Process

Cloth is soaked in tannin-rich solution from boiled leaves. Artisans paint designs using fermented mud from riverbeds. The iron reacts with tannin to create permanent dark patterns.
