Kente Cloth: Ashanti Royal Weaving Guide

Royal Origins

Kente originated among the Ashanti of Ghana around the 17th century. According to tradition, two brothers observed a spider and replicated the technique on a loom.

Silk Introduction

Silk transformed kente from cotton to luxurious fabric. Initially obtained by unraveling imported fabrics, now using commercial silk threads.

Pattern Meanings

'Sika fre mogya' (money calls blood) emphasizes family obligation. 'Adwinasa' (my skill is exhausted) uses every known technique.

Weaving Technique

Kente is woven on a 4-inch narrow strip loom. Strips are carefully aligned and sewn together so patterns flow continuously.

Wearing Protocols

Men drape toga-style over one shoulder. Women wear as wrapper skirt with matching blouse. Certain patterns are reserved for specific ranks.
