Noah Tanaka·Published

The Warrior's Garment
The fugu (also called batakari) is a handwoven smock originating from northern Ghana. Traditionally worn by warriors and chiefs, it remains a powerful symbol of northern Ghanaian identity.
Construction
Fugu is made from narrow strips of handwoven cotton, sewn together vertically. The characteristic V-shaped neckline and loose fit allow for ventilation in the hot savanna climate.
Protective Elements
Traditional fugu often incorporate leather amulets and protective symbols sewn into the garment. These talismans are believed to offer spiritual protection to the wearer.
Political Significance
Ghanaian presidents and politicians frequently wear fugu at official functions, making it a symbol of national identity.
