Ghana Kente Cloth: Royal Ashanti Textile

The Royal Fabric

Kente is a strip-woven cloth from the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana. Once reserved for royalty, kente patterns carry deep symbolic meaning — each design has a name and a proverb.

Weaving Process

Men weave kente on narrow looms, producing strips 4 inches wide. These strips are sewn together to create larger garments.

Color Meanings

  • Gold: royalty, wealth, spiritual purity
  • Green: vegetation, growth, renewal
  • Blue: peace, harmony, love
  • Red: political passion, blood of ancestors
