Ghana Kente Cloth: Royal Fabric of the Ashanti
The Cloth of Kings
Kente is the most famous African textile in the world, a hand-woven strip cloth from the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana. Originally reserved for royalty, kente has become a global symbol of African heritage and pride.
Weaving Technique
Kente is woven in narrow strips on horizontal treadle looms operated by men. The strips are carefully aligned and sewn together to create large cloths. A single kente cloth may require months of weaving.
Pattern Philosophy
Each kente pattern has a name and proverb. Oyokoman signifies unity. Sika futuro (gold dust) represents wealth. The weaver chooses patterns that convey specific messages about the wearer or occasion.
Color Symbolism
Colors carry meaning: gold for royalty, green for growth, blue for peace, red for political passion, and black for maturity and spiritual energy. The combination of colors creates layered meanings.
