Bespoke Tailoring: The Complete Process
Marcus Reid·Published

Bespoke tailoring represents the highest level of garment making: a suit created from scratch for one individual's body, preferences, and lifestyle.
The Consultation
Your first meeting establishes your needs, preferences, and budget. The tailor discusses fabric options (weight, weave, origin), style details (lapel width, button stance, trouser cut), and intended use.
Measuring and Pattern Drafting
Unlike made-to-measure (which adjusts existing patterns), bespoke creates a unique paper pattern from your measurements. A master tailor takes 20+ measurements, noting posture, shoulder slope, and other asymmetries.
Fittings and Refinement
A bespoke suit requires multiple fittings. The basted fitting uses temporary stitching so the tailor can assess fit and make major adjustments. Forward fittings refine the details.
