Rei Kawakubo: Deconstruction as Fashion Art
Jonas Cole·Published

The Shock of the New
When Rei Kawakubo showed her first Paris collection in 1981, critics called it "Hiroshima chic" and "post-atomic." The garments — oversized, torn, asymmetrical, predominantly black — challenged every assumption about what fashion could be.
Design Philosophy
Kawakubo designs from the space between body and cloth. She seeks what she calls "the space in between" — not clothing that flatters the body, but clothing that creates new forms around it.
Key Collections
- Destroy (1982): ripped, frayed, all-black garments
- Body Meets Dress (1997): padded lumps and bumps under stretch fabric
- Not Making Clothing (2014): sculptural objects that barely resembled garments
Legacy and Influence
Comme des Garcons has influenced generations of designers — from Martin Margiela to Demna. The brand's retail concept (Dover Street Market) and trading empire prove that avant-garde vision and commercial success are not mutually exclusive.
