Tongan Ngatu: Ceremonial Tapa Cloth

Ngatu, the Tongan word for tapa cloth, plays a central role in Tongan ceremonial life. Unlike many Pacific islands where tapa production has declined, Tonga maintains an active tradition of ngatu making.

Collaborative Production

Ngatu making is inherently communal. Groups of women gather to beat bark, prepare dyes, and paint designs. The largest ngatu can measure over 50 meters long and require the coordinated effort of dozens of women.

Kupesi Design System

Tongan kupesi are design tablets made from coconut midrib and pandanus leaf. Placed under the cloth during rubbing, they transfer standardized patterns including manulua (paired birds) and various plant motifs.

Ceremonial Function

Ngatu is essential to Tongan life-passage ceremonies. At weddings, enormous ngatu are exchanged between families. At funerals, ngatu wraps the deceased and lines the path to the grave.
