Samoan Siapo: Design Patterns & Meaning
Marcus Aldridge·Published

Patterns of Identity
Siapo is Samoa's traditional bark cloth art, distinguished by its bold geometric patterns and earth-toned dyes. Each design element carries specific meanings rooted in Samoan cosmology.
Natural Dyes
Siapo artists use dyes from the o'a tree (brown), candlenut soot (black), and turmeric (yellow). These natural materials connect the art directly to the Samoan landscape.
Design Elements
Common motifs include the fa'a'ali'i (chiefly pattern), va'a (canoe), and various plant forms. Designs are applied using upeti (rubbing boards) or freehand painting.
Living Tradition
While mass-produced fabrics have replaced siapo in daily wear, the art form thrives in ceremonial contexts and as a source of cultural pride.
