Uzbek Suzani: Embroidery of Central Asia
Olivia Hartwell·Published

Thread and Tradition
Suzani—from the Persian word for needle—is a form of decorative textile embroidery practiced across Central Asia for centuries. Uzbekistan's cities each developed distinctive styles.
Regional Variations
- Bukhara: Red and white, pomegranate and floral motifs
- Samarkand: Bold sun medallions, vibrant palette
- Shakhrisabz: Dense geometric patterns, dark backgrounds
- Nurata: White on white, minimalist elegance
Techniques
Traditional suzanis use basma (couching stitch) for large areas and kanda-khayol (cross-stitch) for fine detail. Silk thread on cotton ground is the classic combination.
Revival Movement
Soviet industrialization nearly eliminated handwork. Since independence, Uzbek craft cooperatives have revived suzani-making, and UNESCO recognized the tradition as intangible cultural heritage.
