Turkish Oya Needle Lace: Techniques & Styles
Anouk Beaumont·Published

What Is Oya?
Oya is a form of needle lace unique to Turkey, created with a single needle and thread, building three-dimensional floral motifs stitch by stitch.
Regional Styles
Aegean oya features bold florals. Central Anatolian oya tends toward geometric patterns. Black Sea oya uses corn and hazelnut motifs.
Social Significance
In traditional Turkish society, oya served as nonverbal communication. A tulip oya indicated engagement, a cypress pattern expressed mourning.
Technical Process
Creating oya requires a fine needle, silk or cotton thread, and extraordinary patience. A single headscarf edge can take 40 to 80 hours.
Modern Practice
Rural women's cooperatives produce oya for sale to tourists and cultural institutions, maintaining the craft as economic activity.
