Priya Sutaria·Published

Ancient Origins
The Pazyryk carpet, dated to approximately 400 BCE, is widely attributed to Armenian weavers based on its construction technique and Armenian cochineal dye.
Dragon Rugs
The vishapagorg features highly stylized dragon motifs traceable to pre-Christian Armenian mythology.
Symbolism
The tree of life represents immortality. Eagle motifs symbolize power. Cross-shaped medallions reflect Armenia's status as the first Christian kingdom.
Technical Characteristics
Armenian carpets use the symmetrical knot on wool foundation, dyed with Armenian cochineal for reds and walnut husks for browns.
Preservation
The Megerian Carpet Museum in Yerevan and the Tufenkian Foundation document surviving examples and train new weavers.
