Sewing Pattern Reading Basics Guide

Decoding Pattern Symbols

Commercial sewing patterns contain a visual language of symbols and markings that guide construction. Learning to read these symbols ensures accurate cutting and assembly, reducing errors and frustration.

Grain Lines and Layout

The grain line arrow must align parallel to the fabric selvage. This ensures the garment hangs and drapes correctly. Patterns also show fold lines (place on fabric fold) and cutting lines (solid lines for your size).

Construction Marks

Notches (triangular marks) match pattern pieces during assembly. Dots and circles indicate dart points, pocket placement, and buttonhole positions. Dashed lines show stitching lines or fold lines for pleats and tucks.

Size Selection

Pattern sizes differ from ready-to-wear sizes. Always measure your body and compare to the pattern size chart before cutting. Multi-size patterns let you blend between sizes for a custom fit across bust, waist, and hip measurements.
