Scottish Tartans: Clans, Colors, and Identity
Daniel Osei·Published

Woven Heritage
Scottish tartans are among the world's most recognized textile traditions. Each pattern of intersecting colored stripes identifies a clan, region, or institution.
History of Clan Tartans
Contrary to popular belief, clan-specific tartans are largely a 19th-century invention. Before the Dress Act of 1746 banned Highland dress, tartans reflected local weaver preferences and available dyes.
The Register
The Scottish Register of Tartans (established 2008) catalogs over 7,000 registered designs. Anyone can commission a new tartan, but official clan tartans require chief approval.
Beyond Scotland
Corporate tartans, military tartans, and commemorative designs have expanded the tradition globally. Japanese and American designers now create tartan-inspired collections.
