Most of Scotland 140+ clans have registered tartans with specific sett patterns and color combinations.
Tartan Categories
- Clan tartans — registered to specific families
- District tartans — associated with regions
- Royal tartans — Balmoral (personal to Royal Family)
- Universal — open to anyone
The Register
The Scottish Register of Tartans maintains the official database since 2009. Anyone can register a new design.
Wearing Etiquette
If you have Scottish ancestry, wear your clan tartan. Otherwise choose universal or district tartans. Royal Stewart is appropriate for anyone.
