Scottish Highland Dress: Complete Style Guide

Scottish Highland dress is one of the few national costumes still worn regularly for formal occasions. Understanding its components, conventions, and the complex rules around tartan wearing reveals a system as refined as any sartorial tradition.

The Kilt

The modern kilt is made from 8 yards of tartan wool, pleated at the back and wrapped at the front. It should fall to the middle of the knee when kneeling. The sett (pattern) must be centered, with pleats showing the dominant color of the tartan.

Essential Accessories

The sporran (pouch) hangs from the kilt belt, compensating for the kilt's lack of pockets. Day sporrans are leather; evening versions feature horsehair or fur. The sgian dubh (black knife) sits in the sock. Kilt pins secure the front apron.

Formality Levels

Day wear pairs Argyll jackets with wool hose. Evening formal (white tie) requires a Prince Charlie coatee, lace jabot, and full plaid. Black tie Highland wear uses a regulation doublet with silk bow tie.
