Basque Dress: Txapela and Espadrilles

Basque traditional dress reflects the unique cultural identity of the Basque people, whose language and customs predate most European nations. Accessories like the txapela beret and espadrilles remain everyday items.

The Txapela

The txapela (beret) is the Basque people's most recognized accessory. Traditionally black wool, it sits flat on the head with a small center button. The txapela is awarded as a trophy in Basque sporting competitions.

Espadrilles

Hand-sewn espadrilles with jute soles and cotton uppers originated in the Pyrenees. Traditional Basque espadrilles feature distinctive braided patterns on the sole and ribbon ties that wrap around the ankle.

Festival Dress

Basque festival costumes feature white shirts and trousers with red sashes and neckerchiefs for San Fermin, while more elaborate versions include embroidered waistcoats for traditional dances.
