Mongolian Deel: The Steppe Riding Robe

The deel is Mongolia's traditional garment: a long, loose-fitting robe designed for the practical demands of nomadic horseback life. Its design has remained remarkably consistent for centuries, proving that form truly follows function on the Mongolian steppe.
Construction and Design
The deel wraps across the body with the left panel over the right, fastened at the shoulder and side with knot buttons or silver clasps. The high collar protects against wind, while the wide sleeves double as gloves in cold weather.
Seasonal Variations
Summer deels are made from cotton or silk in lighter colors. Winter deels are lined with sheepskin or fox fur, with the fur side facing inward for warmth. The terleg is a lightweight summer deel worn for festivals and formal occasions.
Cultural Significance
The deel is worn at Naadam (the three games festival), Tsagaan Sar (Lunar New Year), and weddings. The quality of fabric and silver fasteners indicates social status and regional identity.
