Mongolian Deel: Steppe Survival Garment

The Deel: Built for the Steppe

The deel is Mongolia national garment — a long robe with right-side closure, high collar, and wide sleeves. Designed for -40C winters and +40C summers.

Construction

The deel always closes to the right — closing to the left is associated with death. The wide sash belt serves as back support for riding and a pouch for personal items.

Seasonal Variations

  • Summer deel: single layer of cotton or silk
  • Winter deel: padded with cotton or lined with sheepskin
  • Festival deel: silk brocade with fur trim

Ethnic Variations

Each Mongolian ethnic group has a distinct deel style. The deel style immediately identifies the wearer ethnicity.
