Japanese Yuzen Dyeing: Kimono Canvas Art
Noah Tanaka·Published

Painting on Silk
Yuzen is a Japanese resist-dyeing technique that allows artisans to apply free-form designs to fabric — essentially painting on silk. Named after Miyazaki Yuzensai, a 17th-century Kyoto fan painter.
The Process
Designs are traced using dayflower juice ink. Rice paste resist is applied along the outlines. Dyes are brushed within the resist boundaries, creating detailed multicolor images.
Major Styles
- Kyo-yuzen (Kyoto): elegant, subtle, with gold leaf
- Kaga-yuzen (Kanazawa): naturalistic, with insect-eaten leaf motif
- Tokyo-yuzen (Edo): bold, graphic, samurai-influenced
