Indonesian Ikat Weaving Guide

The Art of Ikat in Indonesia
Indonesian ikat weaving produces some of the world's most complex and beautiful textiles. The archipelago hosts dozens of distinct ikat traditions, each reflecting local culture, beliefs, and natural environment.
Types of Ikat
Warp ikat (ikat of the warp threads) dominates in Sumba and Flores. Weft ikat (ikat of the weft threads) is practiced in Bali and Lombok. Double ikat, where both warp and weft are resist-dyed, is produced only in the village of Tenganan in Bali, creating the sacred geringsing cloth.
Natural Dyes
Traditional dyers use indigo for blue, mengkudu root for red, turmeric for yellow, and various barks for brown. The best natural-dyed ikat shows deep, rich colors that improve with age. The knowledge of natural dye recipes is passed from mother to daughter as closely guarded family secrets.
Cultural Functions
Ikat textiles serve ceremonial, social, and spiritual functions. In Sumba, ikat cloths wrap the deceased for burial. In Flores, specific patterns are reserved for bridewealth exchanges. In Bali, geringsing cloth protects the wearer from spiritual harm.
