Indian Sari: Regional Draping Styles
Priya Sutaria·Published

One Garment, Many Traditions
The sari is perhaps the most versatile garment in the world. A single length of fabric—usually 5 to 9 yards—can be draped in over 100 different ways across India.
Nivi Style (Andhra Pradesh)
The most common style worldwide, with pleats in front and the pallu draped over the left shoulder.
Bengali Style
Draped without pleats, with the pallu coming over both shoulders. Keys are often tied to the pallu corner as a weight.
Gujarati Style
The pallu comes from the back over the right shoulder and is spread across the front, showcasing the fabric's design.
Modern Innovations
Contemporary designers create pre-draped saris and fusion styles that make this ancient garment accessible to new wearers.
