Hanfu: China's Ancient Dress Revived

Hanfu is the traditional clothing of the Han Chinese people, spanning over 3,000 years of continuous development. After near-extinction during the Qing Dynasty, hanfu is experiencing a massive revival among young Chinese.

Historical Styles

Hanfu encompasses diverse garments across dynasties: the flowing robes of Han Dynasty, the elegant ruqun of Tang, the refined styles of Song, and the elaborate court dress of Ming. Each dynasty contributed unique silhouettes, fabrics, and accessories.

Key Garments

The ruqun (cross-collar blouse with skirt) is the most popular modern style. The shenyi (one-piece deep robe) was standard formal wear. The beizi (open-front jacket) adds layering. All styles follow the right-over-left collar closure convention.

Revival Movement

Since 2003, an estimated 5 million Chinese regularly wear hanfu. Social media platforms like Douyin and Xiaohongshu have driven the trend. Major cities host annual Hanfu festivals, and historical accuracy societies research authentic construction methods.

  • Hanfu Day: 3rd day of 3rd lunar month
  • Universities increasingly allow hanfu at graduations
  • Online marketplaces offer styles from 0 to ,000+
