Inuit Amauti: Arctic Parka Design Heritage

The Inuit amauti is one of the most ingeniously designed garments in human history. Created for survival in the harshest conditions on Earth, it combines extraordinary warmth with the practical needs of mothers caring for infants in Arctic conditions.

Design Innovation

The amauti features a built-in baby pouch (amaut) at the back, allowing mothers to carry infants against their bare back for warmth while keeping their hands free.

Materials

Traditional amauti use caribou skin for winter (fur facing inward for insulation) and seal gut for waterproof summer versions. The translucent seal gut is remarkably lightweight and windproof.

Construction

Patterns are cut using traditional templates passed down through generations. Seams are sewn with sinew thread using a waterproof stitch. The hood is shaped to fit snugly around the face.
