Ethiopian Habesha Kemise: Dress Traditions

The habesha kemise is Ethiopia's iconic traditional dress: a flowing white cotton garment adorned with colorful embroidered borders called tibeb. Worn across the Ethiopian highlands, it represents centuries of textile craftsmanship and cultural identity.
Fabric and Weaving
Traditional kemise fabric is handwoven on pit looms from locally grown cotton. The fabric, called shemma, is woven in narrow strips and sewn together. The finest quality has a slight sheen and soft drape that distinguishes it from machine-made alternatives.
Tibeb Borders
The tibeb is the decorative border along the hem, neckline, and sleeves. Woven separately on a small loom, these bands feature geometric and cross motifs in vibrant colors. The complexity and width of the tibeb indicate the formality of the occasion.
Occasion and Styling
Simple kemises with narrow tibeb are worn daily. Elaborate versions with wide, intricate borders are reserved for weddings, religious festivals, and formal gatherings. The netela (shawl) adds another layer of elegance.
